First order irrationality criteria for series
Following a question of Brun, we consider the possibility of finding a first order statement that the rational summands in an infinite series can be checked against in order to give a sufficient condition for the series to sum to an irrational value. We show that such a statement can exist in structures that define the integers, but not in o-minimal structures. 2010 Mathematics Subject Classifi...
متن کاملIrrationality of certain infinite series
In this paper a new direct proof for the irrationality of Euler's number e = ∞ k=0 1 k! is presented. Furthermore, formulas for the base b digits are given which, however, are not computably effective. Finally we generalize our method and give a simple criterium for some fast converging series representing irrational numbers.

متن کاملA Family of Criteria for Irrationality of Euler’s Constant
Abstract. Following earlier results of Sondow, we propose another criterion of irrationality for Euler’s constant γ. It involves similar linear combinations of logarithm numbers Ln,m. To prove that γ is irrational, it suffices to prove that, for some fixed m, the distance of dnLn,m (dn is the least common multiple of the n first integers ) to the set of integers Z does not converge to 0. A simi...
متن کاملCriteria for irrationality, linear independence, transcendence and algebraic independence
For proving linear independence of real numbers, Hermite [6] considered simultaneous approximation to these numbers by algebraic numbers. The point of view introduced by Siegel in 1929 [14] is dual (duality in the sense of convex bodies): he considers simultaneous approximation by means of independent linear forms. We define the height of a linear form L = a0X0 + · · · + amXm with complex coeff...
